Open house at new volunteer center, warehouse draws crowd

The MHVI Bunker, our new home
The MHVI Bunker's two buildings for donations, storage and distribution of household goods, furniture and clothing.

Scores of people attended an open house May 11 at the MHVI Bunker, 7222 W Fond du Lac Ave. (View Map) a former Milwaukee Dept. of Public Works facility which has been vacant for a number of years. The Depts. of Public Works and City Development, Mayor Tom Barrett's office and Ald. Joe Davis Sr. all supported our efforts and made it happen. We are grateful for their support and vision.

If you have items to donate, -- furniture, household items, food -- you can drop them off between 9 and 1 Wednesdays through Saturdays, or call us to arrange a pickup.

One building will be the Volunteer Center, where on scheduled work days we will assemble personal hygiene/toiletry kits, used in our outreach to homeless veterans.  and kitchen kits with dishes and other items for formerly homeless vets  and their families moving into new homes.

The other, a former DPW garage, will serve as a warehouse  to store donated furniture, household items and other necessities until it is delivered to veterans in need. Our crew is doing pickups and deliveries on a daily basis.

Since Feb. 1, we have furnished houses, apartments and rooms for more than 50 veterans and their families who are moving into new living spaces and beginning new lives. Most of them are starting again with nothing, so your donations of furniture, bedding, kitchen items and more are a godsend to these vets and families struggling to begin anew.

Veterans Day events help homeless vets

Veterans Day weekend is jam-packed with opportunities to help the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative and the homeless and at-risk veterans we serve. It starts on Saturday, Nov. 9, with a Comedy Show. On Sunday, Nov. 10, we will sponsor a Turkey Dinner, open to the public, with veterans in need as our guests. And on Monday, Nov. 11, Beyond Glory, a stirring tribute to Medal of Honor recipients at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts will share the proceeds with MHVI. See the details on our Event Page and join us for one or all of them if you can.
