Home Support Program of

Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative

When a veteran finally gets an apartment, through the Veterans Administration, HUD, or another program, he/she is often given the keys and little else. The veteran often has no furniture – not even a bed -- no household items, and no resources to purchase them. A pantry may provide food, but the vet may not even have a can opener or a saucepan.  That's where MHVI comes in.

We have tried to fill that gap by accepting donations of furniture. kitchen and household items, toiletries and food from individuals and businesses and delivering them to veterans and their families setting up housekeeping.  We give them everything they need to get started on the road to independence and self-respect.

This program has grown steadily, and we have furnished more than 800 veterans’ apartments since we began the program in a small way in 2009. Three workers –  formerly homeless veterans themselves – do  pickups and deliveries Tuesday through Saturday.   In 2014, MHVI helped 311 veterans and their families move into new living spaces, and provided donated items valued at more than $250,000.

This year, we've begun a wellness assessment program, with funding from Faye McBeath Foundation, in conjunction with the UW-Milwaukee College of Nursing.  Nursing students go to the homes of veterans we have served to conduct wellness and safety assessments and connect veterans with services that will help them with medical needs and quality of life issues. The outreach services include follow-up on medical appointments, prescriptions, and other health needs, and connect veterans with other services they need.
