Holiday Party for Vets' Families -- December 14

We are seeing an increasing number of families among the veterans we serve and move into new living spaces. It both heart-warming to see how happy the children are with a place to call home, and heart-wrenching to see how little they have as their parents struggle to begin their new lives and work toward independence.

We are inviting those families to a holiday party on Dec. 14 at the MHVI Bunker.  Our goal is to give each child at least one present, and we hope to give some kids' presents to give the parents to help out with Christmas morning. Dryhootch will have a tree at 1030 E Brady Street and we will have one at the bunker, 7222 W Fond du Lac, with cards containing the gender and age of the children if you would like to buy gift(s). You can call our office if you would like to adopt a family as we have from 2 to 7 in a family.

With a holiday should be a meal, but for many of our families food is a precarious need that competes with electricity, rent, gas, and healthcare needs, so we also want to give our families a meal they can share. Donations of canned cranberries, yams, stuffing, boxed mash potatoes and Bisquick or Jiffy Corn muffins are needed. Our greatest wish for the families is if we could provide some meat for the meal like turkey, chicken or a roast. MHVI has a freezer to store the meat until the meal would be delivered.

Some of our families would like Christmas trees. We have room to store artificial and real trees at the Bunker. We currently have 3 trees. We also are looking for lights and decorations, which we have been collecting, but will need much more.

Last, we will need volunteers to play "santa" and deliver food, presents, and trees to many of the families that do not have transportation and only travel by bus.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference this year, consider helping bring a little more sparkle, a little more hope, a smile to a veteran and his or her children this year. CONTACT us at info@mkehomelessvets.com or 414-763-5596. Our phones are answered Tue. through Sat. from 9 am to 2 pm. Sometimes we have a number of calls at the same time, please leave a message and we will call you back.
